Micromechanical Considerations of Particle Breakage Using Discrete Element Method
نویسنده
چکیده
Using DEM (Discrete Element Method), a model is presented to simulate the breakage of two-dimensional polygonshaped particles. In this model, shapes of the particles generated after breakage are predefined and each uniform (uncracked) particle is replaced with smaller inter-connected sub-particles. If the bond between these sub-particles breaks, breakage will happen. With the help of this model, it is possible to study the influence of particle breakage on macro and micro mechanical parameters. In this simulation, the evolution of microstructure in granular assemblies can be seen by tracing of coordination number during the shear process. Also variation of contact normal, normal force and tangential force anisotropy can be tracked. For this purpose, two series of biaxial test simulations (breakage is enabled and disabled) are conducted on assemblies of two-dimensional polygon-shaped particles and the results are compared. It is found that the simulation results are in good agreement with observations obtained from experimental tests.

متن کاملThe incremental response of soils. An investigation using a discrete-element model
The incremental stress-strain relation of dense packings of polygons is investigated by using moleculardynamics simulations. The comparison of the simulation results to the continuous theories is performed using explicit expressions for the averaged stress and strain over a representative volume element. The discussion of the incremental response raises two important questions of soil deformati...
متن کاملCopula-based approximation of particle breakage as link between DEM and PBM
In process engineering, the breakage behavior of particles is needed for the modeling and optimization of comminution processes. A popular tool to describe (dynamic) processes is population balance modeling (PBM), which captures the statistical distribution of particle properties and their evolution over time. It has been suggested previously to split up the description of breakage into a machi...
متن کاملParticle-scale mechanics of sand crushing in compression and shearing using DEM
In this paper, the discrete element method is used to explore why differing amounts of breakage, quantified using Hardin’s relative breakage parameter (Br), are associated with the critical state line (CSL) and the normal compression line (NCL) at similar stress levels. Virtual samples initially containing more than 20,000 spherical particles were isotropically compressed to a range of confinin...
